The region championship is up for grabs in Region 4-AAAAA and the Lady Golden Eagles took on Jones County High School for the coveted region title.

In the past few meeting, it’s been Eagle’s Landing, but after the last regular season match where the Lady Golden Eagles won 57-50, the forecast for Friday was another close game. Eagle’s Landing did everything they needed for the 56-46 region title victory.

If there was going to be an accurate barometer for a game, the first quarter was everything that it needed to be. The game found four lead changes in the first quarter but as Eagle’s Landing held the lead for most of the first four minutes.

Jones County grabbed their first lead on a sequence of turnovers and misplaced feet going out of bounds opened the door for the momentum shift. The Lady Golden Eagles avoided danger when the Lady Greyhounds struggled to score and eventually regained the lead briefly on a Jalisa Dunlap lay-up.

Reyonna Hopkins was the last to get on the board in the first quarter as a timely and-1 gave the program the lead back. But it was as precarious as one could imagine for either side.

With a 10-9 lead Lady Golden Eagle’s had their work cut out for them once more. Jones County’s Ty Richardson knicked in a three-pointer before Nikki Greene checked in with a three of her own.

Mone Florence pulled Eagle’s Landing back from a 15-12 deficit before Hopkins toed the line once again for the Lady Golden Eagles. Mariyah Fletcher added another score to Eagle’s Landing however, Jones County didn’t back down.

With 30 seconds remaining in the second quarter, Jones County took the lead but a Dunlap three handed Eagle’s Landing the lead into halftime.

When the third quarter started, Peterson’s squad looked like the program that entered the region tournament as the No. 1 program. 20 points hit the board from six different players while the Lady Greyhounds struggled to score six.

At the end of the third, Eagle’s Landing looked to go into conservative mode with the 45-29 lead. Jones County only came as close as nine points of the lead while Eagle’s Landing won the region title.

Dunlap led the Lady Golden Eagles with 15 points.
